ELD Providers Marketplace Update
The proliferation of ELD devices continues. As ELD usage in the US trucking industry begins to stabilize, some ELD providers have collapsed, while others have been bought up by bigger players.
There are currently 405 FMCSA approved devices in the marketplace. In our ongoing analysis, it’s clear that the vast majority of devices are from resellers. There are several major ELD providers who sell their systems as white-labelled. Almost any supplier can become a reseller. They buy the rights to an ELD system, and label it as their own. If the reseller also uses the Provider’s backend, the revenue is usually split.
The ELD Providers, supplying the white-label systems, vary in quality and features. One of the key issues we’ve seen is that the reseller rarely has any control over features required for specific customers. This is particularly concerning for Canadian truckers, as many of the US based systems have few rule sets and regulatory compliances for Canada.
As the Canada ELD mandate approaches we will continue to build a specific Canada-Friendly catalogue of the best ELD systems.
