Canada ELD Update
On December 16, 2017, Transport Canada released Gazette 1 on the amendments to begin legislation on ELD regulations in Canada.
The government legislation is a basically a three-part process:
- The Canada Gazette releases information on proposed legislation. At this phase, the public are free to provide comments.
- There is a second release, some months later, commonly called Gazette 2. Essentially, this is the final new law.
- Legislative approval. The legislation is processed through the House of Commons, and several other government bodies.
You can read the Gazette 1 relative to ELD changes here: http://www.gazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p1/2017/2017-12-16/html/reg5-eng.html#reg
All indications are that we can expect the ELD Mandate to proceed, with a go-live date sometime in the Spring of 2019.
If you’re a Canada-only trucker, you have a huge advantage over your American counterparts. Through 2018, we’ll have some hard data on the quality of the ELD systems out there, as they are being live field tested in the States. You will have some time to test various systems and be fully prepared when the Canadian ELD deadline approaches.
